About Our Classes

While there are no live sessions, asynchronous classes are still a lively and rigorous experience. Async classes are not static lessons but an adaptable and energetic community space. Be ready to work in a collaborative environment, giving and receiving feedback on your writing, participating in discussions, and growing your writing practice in a way that works best for you. Class lengths vary, from three-hour generative writing sessions to yearlong manuscript critiques.

Hugo House is a nonprofit literary arts organization that aims to open the literary world to everyone who loves books or has the drive to write. We continue to be devoted to writers and remain committed to running a fiscally healthy organization. These goals have anchored Hugo House since its inception, and we remain resolute in our focus on them. However, we also have a new and vigorous focus on expanding our reach. Write with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for adults of all experience levels and genres of writing.

Captions are available upon request for all online classes. Classes are meant for adults unless otherwise marked or included on our Youth page. If you are a minor who would like to attend an adult class, please contact the registrar to receive a waiver to be signed by your parent or guardian certifying that you understand adult content could be discussed in this class. From an impoverished childhood in White Center, Richard Hugo became a poetic chronicler of overlooked people and places. He wrote about life along the Duwamish River, about people who lived in shacks on the city’s outskirts. Drawing inspiration from SoHo’s 20th century warehouses, architect Marcello Pozzi’s design for the 20-story hotel mixes ground floor vertical gardens with miles of glass.

Intermediate | For writers with some experience in genre-specific instruction who want to deepen their understanding and hone their craft, often featuring a workshop component. With any donation of $60 or more, our members get discounts for a wide range of bookstores, events, and Hugo House classes. Become a member or give the gift of membership to a writer in your life. We want Hugo House to be profoundly welcoming to all writers and readers, to advance racial equity, and to ensure diversity and inclusion. Tucked between SoHo and the Hudson, Hotel Hugo is a stylish and sophisticated hotel in Manhattan’s emerging West SoHo neighborhood.

Our signature Speaker Series brings acclaimed and talented writers from around the region and the country to share their work and knowledge of the writing craft with the Hugo House community. Sliding scale tuition starts at $5 and goes up to 125% of the standard pricing. Payments above the 100% rate help fund future accessible writing classes and programming. At a time when rising urban rents are driving many artists out of town and threatening small cultural organizations, the Hugo House community has come together to write a different story. The four goals of our strategic plan detail the direction we will head over the coming years.

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences. Hugo House is a nonprofit literary arts organization that aims to make writing accessible. Residencies, one for an established writer and one for a youth writer, are also offered. Advanced | For writers with significant experience in writing classes or workshops who are prepared to engage in comprehensive critiques and craft discussions. Scribes summer camps offer the chance for youth writers to dive deep into their writing in workshop sessions during the summer months. Camps are offered on a variety of topics both in-person and online as full- and half-week series.

Scribes Summer Camps

If a class is intended for a specific level, it will be noted in the class description. In this city of ideas, there was no central place for readers and writers to meet and build new audiences for their work. We offer numerous programs for anyone looking to explore the written word. Some of these programs are application-based, and many are free and open to all. All Levels | For any writer, at any level, regardless of prior writing class experience.

Poetry of Grief & Healing

Hugo House’s calendar is packed with events throughout the year, from readings to craft talks, writing circles to open mics, and so much more. When Hugo House events aren’t happening, we strive to make our space available, accessible, and active by providing space for events developed and produced by people within our literary community. Our courses cover a wide range of writing styles and experiences. Whether you’re struggling to write your first poem or have a few novels behind you, Hugo House writing classes will support and inspire you. Our classes are taught by published writers who are also stellar teachers.

For all writers.

His parents immigrated here and worked as street vendors for most of his life to give Hugo and his five siblings more opportunities than they had in Mexico. After his dad became disabled, Hugo started working at a non-union hotel at the age of 16 to help out his family. Shortly before graduating college, he joined with his coworkers to form a union – earning better working conditions and respect on the job.

We want to engage new groups of people, creating opportunities to connect more deeply with the power of the written word. Novelist David Guterson had won the PEN/Faulkner Award. Poet Denise Levertov was inspiring young writers with her work and activism. Hugo Soto-Martínez was born and raised in Los Angeles.

Drawing inspiration from SoHo’s art-meets-industrial atmosphere, Hotel Hugo blends raw materials with Midcentury modern furnishings to create environments that evoke both trend and tradition. Write with Hugo House (in partnership with the Seattle Public Library) is a free drop-in writing circle for adults of all ages and genres of writing. In this session, we’ll focus on generative writing through poetry prompts. Hugo House is committed to being a place for all writers and readers. To help us achieve that goal, we offer a number of free programs and resources, as well as scholarships for paid courses and discounted memberships. We bring Pulitzer Prize winners, poets laureate, community favorites, and new talents into Hugo House for discussions and readings.

Whether you’re sipping a cocktail at the hotel’s sparkling glass-enclosed rooftop bar or enjoying your daily coffee at Felix Roasting Co., Hotel Hugo has a style and spirit all its own. Most classes are offered at a general and member tuition rates based on instruction hours, with Hugo House members receiving a 10% discount on classes fewer than six sessions. Introductory | For anyone new to writing or the writing workshop (critique) setting who wants to expand their knowledge of craft, or any writer exploring a new genre. Most classes at Hugo House are intended for writers with all levels of experience.

Works in Progress is Hugo House’s semi-monthly writing open mic series inclusive of diverse formats. Read your work—poetry, fiction, essays, memoirs, plays, music, comedy, and more—and connect with your literary community. Bring your class or group to Hugo House for an hour of creative writing instruction on anything from poetry to flash fiction, graphic novels to performance, and beyond. Students will work with one of our talented teaching artists to experiment with writing activities, respond to prompts, and share some of their work on stage in our Salon. Whether it’s a reading, discussion, craft talk, or interview, explore these events and more featuring renowned authors, emerging writers, and talented new and local voices.

Our programming brings people closer to the written word, and to each other. Linda Breneman (Jaech), Frances McCue, and Andrea Lewis founded Hugo House as a home for those who prize the written word. They named it for Richard Hugo, who etched the Northwest in verse and who taught so many others how to improve their work.

We offer new courses each season with a range of long-time teachers and special guests. Sign up for our newsletter to keep up to date on the newest course offerings. Hugo House cannot provide refunds or offer makeup sessions for classes a student might miss. If Hugo House has to cancel a class, you will receive a full refund.
