Youth Programs

hugo house

Our programming brings people closer to the written word, and to each other. Linda Breneman (Jaech), Frances McCue, and Andrea Lewis founded Hugo House as a home for those who prize the written word. They named it for Richard Hugo, who etched the Northwest in verse and who taught so many others how to improve their work.

Drawing inspiration from SoHo’s art-meets-industrial atmosphere, Hotel Hugo blends raw materials with Midcentury modern furnishings to create environments that evoke both trend and tradition. Some discuss their influences or reveal works in progress. Our teaching staff include prominent visiting writers, as well as working novelists, poets, essayists, and memoirists. Classes explore the craft of writing, from the basics (Poetry I) to the master class (Book Lab). Whoever you are and wherever your passions lie—if you want to write, there’s a Hugo House class for you. In the Young Writers Cohort, students focus on either poetry or prose with a small group of peer writers and an instructor. High-school aged students who want to focus on their writing are encouraged to apply.

Youth Programs

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences. Hugo House is a nonprofit literary arts organization that aims to make writing accessible. Residencies, one for an established writer and one for a youth writer, are also offered. Advanced | For writers with significant experience in writing classes or workshops who are prepared to engage in comprehensive critiques and craft discussions. Scribes summer camps offer the chance for youth writers to dive deep into their writing in workshop sessions during the summer months. Camps are offered on a variety of topics both in-person and online as full- and half-week series.

We offer classes online, at our Capitol Hill location, and, occasionally, other partner venues around the city. We offer opportunities for young writers to explore their creativity, from intensive Scribes summer writing camps to free drop-in writing circles with caring and experienced mentors. We strive to create a place where that vision comes to life. Where experienced writers become teachers, sharing the craft with new writers. Where passionate readers gather to discuss a new novel.

For all writers.

His parents immigrated here and worked as street vendors for most of his life to give Hugo and his five siblings more opportunities than they had in Mexico. After his dad became disabled, Hugo started working at a non-union hotel at the age of 16 to help out his family. Shortly before graduating college, he joined with his coworkers to form a union – earning better working conditions and respect on the job.

We want to engage new groups of people, creating opportunities to connect more deeply with the power of the written word. Novelist David Guterson had won the PEN/Faulkner Award. Hotels near Southampton Cruise Port Terminal Docks

southampton uk hotels near cruise terminal

Close to East Park it is within walking distance of the City Art Gallery and several shopping centres. Spacious ensuite rooms have free Wi-Fi and rates include a free breakfast. Both private and public transport connects Heathrow airport with Southampton. Private transfers will meet you from your flight and deliver you straight to your hotel, or you can take the National Express coach. Rail travel is also possible but there is no direct service from Heathrow.

Holiday Inn Eastleigh

Some upper rooms have views of the cruise ships as they come and go from the port. There are no shuttle buses or public transport connecting any of Southampton's hotels to the cruise terminals. For a quality hotel that’s great for exploring Hampshire, the Holiday Inn Express Southampton West is top of the list. A few hotels are within 5 to 10 minutes walking distance such as the Novotel and budget friendly ibis hotel, but you can easily take a local taxi to any city centre hotel.

Luxury Hotels near Southampton Port

Make your cruise even more special by adding a few extra days to your holiday. Some of the world’s largest ships dock in this city but it’s also an interesting place to visit. If you are traveling with your own car to Southampton you have several options. We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests.

Travelodge Southampton

southampton uk hotels near cruise terminal

Travelling by train requires you to change in either central London or Woking station. If you prefer to have the transport and hassle of booking tickets organised for you, then check out our private tours from Southampton page. They can be booked as a day trip during your stay at a Southampton hotel, or as a shore excursion from your cruise terminal if your ship has docked here for the day. The only hotels you could possibly walk from to reach your cruise terminal are the Ibis, Ibis Budget, Novotel and Holiday Inn. The other three Southampton cruise terminals are too far as they’re spread out along a couple of miles of coastline.

Overlooking the waterfront, this grand four star hotel has a leisure centre with indoor pool, sauna, gym and Rena Spa along with a bar and grill. All transport providers must adhere to strict Covid guidelines, and are working to make your journey as safe as possible. Travelling on public transport will inevitably bring you into contact with other people and you may need to navigate through busy stations. The meet and greet service and provision of your own sanitised vehicle significantly reduces your contact with other people.

The cities of Winchester and Portsmouth can also be easily reached by train from Southampton. If you have your own transport you could venture a little further and visit Georgian Bath or historic Windsor. An indoor pool, the Mandara Spa, a small fitness centre, choice of restaurants and a patisserie are just some of the facilities on offer here. Bedrooms are available in all sizes and budgets from a standard twin to a top-floor suite, and they all come with wi-fi, a large desk and minibar.

SOUTHAMPTON TRANSFERS

In the hotel there’s a generous lounge area for kicking back in and the onsite bar and eatery is fairly priced. The 105 bedrooms are very spacious and comfy, plus a slap-up breakfast is part of the deal. The Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour has a classical elegance that oozes luxury. With its standout glass atrium, it’s an iconic building of Southampton.

Jurys Inn

On the morning of the voyage, park you car alongside your assigned cruise terminal or nearby car parks. Select a hotel that offers cruise parking, some with a shuttle service to the port or park at one of the car parks close to the terminals. The Leonardo Royal Hotel is opposite the Holiday Inn, so this is also well located for the cruise terminals. This is a very large hotel with the promise of a little more opulence than the Holiday Inn. If boutique is more your style of property, then the Ennios Hotel in the old part of town is a good option.

There are lots of things to consider when booking hotels in Southampton UK near the port. Price, convenience, standard of luxury, options for Cruise and Stay Parking and the distance from the port can all influence your choice. It makes sense to choose a hotel with a shuttle service or one closer to the port for a shorter (cheaper!) taxi journey. Southampton is by far the busiest passenger cruise port in the UK and it is served by many hotels in Southampton. Most people departing on a cruise choose to stay in one of the hotels in Southampton UK near the port, ready to check-in the following day without a problem. The National Express coach is the cheapest way to travel from Heathrow airport to Southampton, so this provides a good option if you're on a tight budget.

Travellers looking for a budget stay before or after their cruise voyage, Glenmore Guest House is one of the most affordable accommodation options. Property is located close to Southampton town centre, but in a quiet neghbourhood. Relax in one of the Single or Double rooms and enjoy a leisurely breakfast the following morning before heading to the port, which is only a short ride away. The popular Park & Cruise package include accommodation, breakfast, return transfer to and from the port and up to 15 days complimentary car parking. For cruises from Portsmouth there’s an additional cost for transfers of £20 each way.

All are within easy walking distance of the train and coach stations and are adjacent to the main shopping centre and a large supermarket. Three eateries serve a range of dishes and one restaurant holds a Michelin star. Jiva Spa has a full menu of treatments and there’s a gym too for the health conscious. Located in SW1, Victoria Railway Station is a 7 to 10-minute walk away – ideal if you’re hopping on a train to reach the cruise port of Southampton.

Looking like they belong in a magazine shoot, each of the 12 bedrooms has been furnished lovingly. With a Medieval wall, the SeaCity museum, an art gallery, top theatre and a sprawling shopping area, there are lots of reasons to stay in Southampton. Southampton is one of Britain’s major ports located on the south coast of England, in the county of Hampshire.

You don’t want to get caught in traffic if you’re travelling to Southampton from London, for example, as it could jeopardize your cruise check-in. The closest hotels to the City and Mayflower cruise terminals are the Holiday Inn, Novotel and Ibis Hotels. If you are fit and travelling comparatively light you can walk to the City cruise terminal in about 10 minutes from these hotels.

There is no train or bus service to the cruise terminals so you either need to walk from your hotel or use a taxi or Uber to get there. Some hotels offer a shuttle service, usually as part of a package with cruise parking. Expect to pay around £7-10 for the trip if you are staying in the city centre.

galápagos cruise

With its raw, natural beauty and amazing wildlife, the isolated Galapagos Islands are best visited by boat, and more specifically, a luxury cruise or liveaboard boat offering different levels of accommodation onboard. Every destination in the Galapagos archipelago has something unique to offer. Across both of Aqua Mare’s itinerary, we visit 16 islands in total. From inhabited islands such as Isabela and Santa Cruz to the remote beaches of Rabida and Mosquera, prepare yourself for an experience that checks off all the boxes.

How rough are the seas? Will I get seasick?

Galápagos cruise prices will vary depending on the class of vessel, the length of itinerary and the capacity of the ship. Below is a more extensive breakdown of the ships you can sail under each company in the Galapagos. What you likely won't find on board are theaters, casinos, large fitness centers, organized exercise classes and spa facilities. Your vessel might have an open-bridge policy, though; check it out to see if you can catch a peek inside. There is also likely to be a water sports platform and equipment storage area with outdoor showers or hoses for rinsing off shoes and feet when you return from landings ashore.

It's also possible you could visit the same island more than once on a sailing. Again, note that specific itineraries will vary by cruise line and are subject to change. In general, cruise lines will break the islands into north, south, east and west loops. The best way to choose between them is to decide which islands you'd most like to visit. With a capacity for up to 100 passengers, Silver Origin, which debuted in 2021, is arguably the most luxurious vessel sailing in the region. Its list of uncommon amenities — butler service, a fitness center, salon and spa — might just make you forget you're not on a larger ship.

Island exploration with Adventures by Disney on Galapagos Legend

Most Galapagos cruises depart from Baltra Island, San Cristobal Island, where two domestic airports are located, or Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz). Your cruise operator will then arrange to collect you from the airport and take you to your ship. Fernandina Island - the youngest and one of the most pristine islands in the Galapagos, provides unparalleled opportunities to see unique species like the flightless cormorant and vast lava fields untouched by invasive species. Return to the vessel to enjoy a delicious BBQ on deck as the sun sets on the horizon or, a sophisticated a la carte dinner.

Activities

The Galapagos Islands’ marine reserve is one of the largest and most biologically diverse in the world. The islands are also one of the places in the world that are best explored by cruise ships. Varied activities await you at each of the visitor points to be explored in Galapagos. Kayak on tranquil bays of turquoise waters, take a peek at colorful sea wildlife while snorkeling, and trek through moon-like volcanic landscapes.

Conditions on the last few days of the trip weren't too good due to low visibility, but the first several sessions were wonderful. Book your next Galapagos cruise adventure to the incredible Galapagos Islands online today. Arrive early - trying to arrive at least 1 to 2 days before your cruise departure date is recommended in case of flight delays. The last thing you want is to miss a few days of your long-awaited Galapagos cruise and have to join the tour later.

You should also bring US$ cash to tip the guides and crew aboard your Galapagos cruise. What to pack - While on your Galapagos expedition, there are a few things you want to take with you to get the most enjoyment out of your Galapagos cruise. A good, comfortable pair of hiking or walking shoes is essential for the trails you will explore.

In an intimate group – with a maximum of 16 guests on our cruise ship – you’ll enjoy a highly personalized experience which is curated to your desires. Over on land, Aqua Mare guests will embark on guided hiking adventures to some of the islands’ hotspots for spotting wildlife. There’ll be opportunities to spot land and marine iguanas — striking creatures which look like they were descendants of the mythical dragons. There’ll also be visits to see the remarkable Giant Tortoises which make for one of the highlights of an expedition to the Galapagos Islands. About 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are a remarkable place to visit for wildlife sightings.

Providing an ecologically sound cruise definitely does not mean that we have to compromise on luxury! Go Galapagos - Kleintours is acutely aware of the fragility and importance of the Galapagos National Park in which we have been operating and doing things right since 1983. Some of our eco-friendly practices include that all toiletries provided in our cabins are biodegradable and made from natural components as well as all the cleaning products used during housekeeping. As a complimentary gift, guests will find a thermos in each cabin to be refilled at one of our vessel’s potable water stations, thus reducing the use of plastic bottles. Our vessels are equipped with sophisticated water treatment plants to desalinate, filter and purify water for consumable use. The decor of our vessels is acquired from sustainable-certified teak plantations and all our food supply is carefully planned to reduce kitchen waste.

Cape Liberty Bayonne New Jersey cruise port schedule

cruise out of new jersey

To do that you’d haveto get a hotel in the city, which can be a nightmare itself. Cruising out ofNew Jersey gives you lots of places you can stay that aren’t in New York, butyou’ll still get to see it from a distance. Read these essential pros and cons on cruises out of New Jersey from the popular Cape Liberty cruise port in Bayonne across from Manhattan. Considering the port’s location, why restrict your trip to the airport, the New Jersey Turnpike, or a hotel? Spend a day experiencing Manhattan before setting sail on cruise from NJ.

The alternative is NYC's public transportation system (trains/buses to either Newark (Pennsylvania Station) or Bayonne (45th Street Light Rail Station), then you need to taxi to the cruise terminal. Newark' Penn Station serves regularly scheduled Amtrak trains interconnecting numerous destinations along the US East Coast. In 2018 was inaugurated the ferry route connecting Bayonne with Manhattan (across Hudson River). A US$650,000 federal grant was given to the city for building of a ferry terminal. The facility is on the southern part of Military Ocean Terminal, on an artificial peninsula east of Route 440.

Cape Liberty Bayonne (New Jersey)

Most of the passengers are locals who don’t need a hotel room before their cruise, which means that options for those who do are somewhat limited. There’s relatively little to do or to look atbecause it’s so remote. The town of Bayonne exists only because the cruise portis there, which means that while there are good restaurants, there’s nothingelse going on in the town. Royal Caribbean andCelebrity are both excellent cruise lines with great ships, so it’s not likethey’re bad choices. But, if you have kids, you might be more interested in aDisney Cruise, or something along those lines. If that’s the case, Cape Libertyis not the cruise port for you.

Cruise Itineraries from Bayonne

Meanwhile, cruise terminals in New York City, Los Angeles, and several other places along both coasts have been operating for decades. The truth is that cruise ports, likeairports, have been built in just about any large city that can host one. This Bayonne cruise terminal, aside from being adjacent to New York City, is in a perfect location for commuters. Rather than dealing with the hectic and unpredictable traffic of New York, travelers coming into Cape Liberty Port already begin their trip on a relaxed note. Just seven miles from New York City and three from Newark Liberty International Airport, the cruise port is convenient for drivers and not too far away from the New Jersey Turnpike. If you don’t want to worry about parking, taking the New Jersey Transit Hudson-Bergen Light Rail directly to the port is another convenient option.

If you’re already going to have to fly to your cruise port, flying somewhere like Florida will give you more cruise options and all of them will give you more time at your destination. Cape Liberty has no tourist destinations, and if you want part of the trip to be exploring Manhattan and NYC, you’re much better off booking a cruise that leaves from Brooklyn or Manhattan. The main reason why so many people don’t realize that New Jersey has a cruise port is that it’s relatively new. The Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal began operations in 2004, and prior to that it was a Naval base.
