Norwegian Cruise Line offers guests the flexibility to design their vacation on their preferred schedule, with no assigned dining and entertainment times and no formal dress codes. Following its debut this past August and its inaugural summer season of European voyages, the ship hosted over 1,500 guests at the ceremony held in the Company’s LEED® Gold Certified terminal at PortMiami. Newer Norwegian Cruise Line ships are generally bigger than older Norwegian ships — sometimes much bigger. As a result, they have room for many more onboard venues and attractions than the line's older vessels.
First itineraries
Setting sail April 2025, Norwegian Aqua will feature all-new specialty dining venue Sukhothai, NCL’s first-ever Thai restaurant, offering flavorful menu highlights such as Thai Cashew Chicken. Aboard Norwegian Aqua, Whiskey Bar will relocate to deck six near the brand-new Swirl Wine Bar, while Belvedere Bar will move to deck eight at the heart of the atrium, where guests can revel in night caps and nightly entertainment. Norwegian Viva is the newest vessel of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), and the second ship in its award-winning Prima Class.
More Wide-Open Spaces
During a regular voyage, guests can upgrade their dining experience to include two dinners at speciality restaurants. Due to the limitations of the christening voyage, we were only able to eat in one of the speciality restaurants, Food Republic. The hull artist is Allison Hueman, the first-ever female artist to design a ship hull for the cruise line. Her distinctive street-art style blends modern mythology and figurative representations of sea and sky with ancient goddesses in a piece entitled “Where the Sky Meets the Sea” exclusively for Norwegian Aqua.

In addition to these complimentary dining venues, guests will also be able to enjoy The Haven Restaurant for free if they are staying in one of the exclusive suites. Other areas of activity and entertainment for guests include the Galaxy Pavilion, an immersive reality experience that allows passengers to explore the first flying theater simulator at sea. When it debuted onboard Norwegian Prima in 2022, this slide was the first free-fall dry slide in the world. There's another second dry slide onboard, too, named "The Rush." This dueling-slide style allows guests to race their travel companions and fellow passengers.

The only ship in its class, Norwegian’s Pride of America is registered in Hawaii and offers week-long itineraries around the islands. The ship debuted in September of 2002 and can carry 2,500 passengers. Epic is the only ship in its class, although there are a few similarities in the subsequent class of Breakaway. Debuting in July of 2009, Norwegian Epic was the 3rd largest ship in the world at the time. At 155,873 gross tons, the ship can carry 4,100 passengers at double capacity.
Cruises
Guests can expect a playful dining experience surrounded by bold colors of lime green and black. Note that all Norwegian ships are regularly renovated and upgraded every few years, so even the oldest Norwegian cruise vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, their eateries and bars have been entirely renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels. Norwegian executives have said the smaller size of the new Prima Class ships would give the line more options in designing itineraries; the vessels are able to access smaller ports around the world than the bigger Norwegian ships can.
The new vessel will also have a three-level go-kart track, the Viva Speedway, which can accommodate up to 15 racers, and a series of thrill rides first seen on Prima, such as The Drop and The Rush, that will offer pulse-quickening moments. Built by Lloyd Werft in Germany, Norwegian Sun was the last Sun-class ship. She was launched in 2001 in a dual christening ceremony with sister ship Norwegian Star. Along with the name change, the ship also received new livery and extra features at that time, including the addition of a casino.
One of NCL’s stand-alone ships without a class, Norwegian Epic debuted in 2010 after being built at the STX France Cruise SA, Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard. Another mammoth Breakaway Plus-class ship, Norwegian Joy was likewise built by Meyer Werft in Germany. Delivered in 2017, the ship has sailed around both Asia and North America.
On the same outdoor deck you'll find The Stadium, which includes shuffleboard tables, table football and other games. Immediately noticeable is Norwegian Aqua‘s vibrant, multi-colored hull art. Unlike her sister ships with their ocean-hued colorations, Norwegian Aqua will have an intense paint scheme with yellow, blue, teal, orange, pink, and purple shades, ensuring the ship is instantly recognizable from every angle. Norwegian Cruise Line’s third Prima-class ship will be named Norwegian Aqua, and she is sure to make a splash.

Oddly enough, the Infinity Pools down on Deck 8 were hotter than the hot tubs. Another bar we spent some time in was the Observation Lounge at the front of Deck 17. The comfy lounge furniture and views made this a pleasant place to spend an hour or so, especially during sunsets. Each of the many bars onboard has its own theme or speciality, from cocktails to whiskey. There are several bars located beside the main restaurants, perfect for a pre- or post-dinner drink, and several outdoor bars too. Perhaps more than anywhere else on the ship, you don’t feel like you’re on the ocean at all.
This meant we had to constantly call the staff and had to wait a long time for the food to arrive, while the six other people at our table experienced no problems. Most of the restaurants are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Given our itinerary, we didn't always have the best weather so some of these outdoor activities were limited. However, when we were in port and the weather was nice, both the golf and darts were fun ways to spend some time.
Hidden at the top of the ship, The Haven features our most luxurious, well-appointed accommodations as well as 24-hour butler service, concierge service and private sundeck. The Norwegian Prima is the first in a en entirely new class of ship from NCL. The second in the prima line of cruise ships, the Norwegian Viva, is under construction right now in Italy, with several more to follow in future years. Guests will also be able to stroll around the cruise line’s largest-ever Ocean Boulevard, wrapping around the ship and linking outdoor dining spaces and seating areas while featuring outstanding views. The glass-floored Oceanwalk bridge is a highlight of the Boulevard and always a remarkable spot for a pause. Norwegian Cruise Line’s guest-favorite bar, Metropolitan, will now include an intimate entertainment space aboard Norwegian Aqua for guests to enjoy live music over award-winning sustainable cocktails.
The ships will also offer the most outdoor deck space of any modern cruise ship. Metropolitan, NCL’s modern Sail & Sustain cocktail bar, which won the 2024 Vibe Vista Award for “Best Beverage Program,” will return aboard Norwegian Aqua and boast a distinct new design from other Prima Class vessels. Relocating from mid-ship to the aft of deck seven, the innovative bar will now feature a grand piano and a small entertainment space for guests to enjoy live music with their Sail & Sustain cocktails, biodynamic wines and sustainably produced liquors. Inspired by the art deco and mid-century modern areas of New York City, Studio DADO crafted an intimate enclave with dark hues, eye-catching motifs and fresh greenery offering an easy-going ambience for guests engaging in a nightly beverage. This private oasis is a ship within a ship and offers a breathtaking sundeck, exclusive amenities and unparalleled personalized service.
